The Stages Of The Restoration

Disassembly

Once the drawing is done, the window (leaded glass panel) gets disassembled and the original salvaged pieces are cleaned, then placed on the drawing one at a time.  Some of the pieces  are unsalvageable because of several breaks. We tape these together anyways and use as a pattern for painting new pieces (picture top right)

As you can see in the photo, the face wasn’t broken. Faces are the hardest thing to paint next to hands and feet.

Painting

You can see us painting the replacements for the missing border glass. (pictured left) We start with the tracing lines first, which then get fired in a kiln before we move onto the shading step. Some pieces are painted and fired several times.

This window was designed, painted, and built by H.J. Horwood of Ogdensburg, NY between 1920 - 1930. During this time, Mr. Horwood was one of the best painters of stained glass in the United States;  making this window, and the other four windows in a series of five, historically very important.
